Italian herb garden

What exactly is an Italian herb garden and how is it different than the usual indoor herb gardens? Well essentially an Italian herb garden is simply a collection of herbs that fall into the Italian range of cooking. Now this explanation may be very simplistic in nature but it turns out that an Italian herb garden may take a little more work than your average indoor herb gardens do.

The reason an Italian herb garden can be a little trickier to pull off than a regular herb garden is you have to have the right mix of herbs to truly have it qualify. If you do not have the right herbs then essentially all you are doing is building a regular herb garden. So what herbs do you need to make your normal herb garden into an Italian herb garden?

Italian Herb Garden – What Sort of Herbs?

Typically in an Italian kitchen you will see the following staple herbs for almost every meal – chives, basil, and oregano and these are the main herbs you want to pick up on for your Italian herb garden. I am personally a big fan of all three of these herbs and use them daily even though I am not Italian! Obviously being Italian has nothing to do with growing an Italian herb garden but I wanted to make a point that essentially anyone can do it.

Imagine the awesomeness of clipping some fresh herbs from your Italian herb garden just as you are cooking your own home made spaghetti sauce. The addition of fresh herbs to a pasta dish can really send the final flavor through the roof.

What is an indoor herb garden?

We often get asked to try and help explain exactly what an indoor herb garden is and suffice to say there is not one specific definition that we can fit in our mind exactly what one is.  The positive side to this is that we can really make an indoor herb garden be exactly whatever you want it to be!  Loosely defined we just basically say that it is any sort of container that you can plant herb seeds and and watch them grow.

What if I want to make my own indoor herb garden?

Get creative with whatever you have laying around to help you build your container.  You really do not have to get that involved or buy anything to start with, especially if you don't have the money, take a look at old coffee cans, jars and even half of a two litre soda bottle!  Just make sure that you drill one or two small pilot holes in the bottom of whatever container you use to let the water seep out if needed.

I remember my first indoor herb garden was actually a gift from a family member and was one of the chia pet herb gardens!  What an awesome little gift this was as this family of mine knew I just loved gardening and this was a great jump start for me to get into herb gardening.  Indoor herb gardening has been, for me at least, a way to kind of escape a little from the hustle and bustle of the world with the pruning and general care taking of takes me away.  Its kind of like a calming effect since my focus is intentional on keeping these little guys alive.
